WHAT I LIKED
I liked the subtle shadings of character given in this performance through the actor’s physicality, his eyes communication and his line delivery. Indeed, it was entirely believable that the actor was Mungo – a drinker, a brawler, one of the notable baseball players of US history, who for this moment in time had returned to “soberly” reflect on the people who were there for him throughout his checkered career. I also enjoyed the script- what the writers chose to tell – their turns of phrase, the rising and falling action all held my interest. On top of that Reyna found the rhythm and meter of the lines, which encouraged the audience to interact and remain spellbound for 55 minutes.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
More people need to see this play – and I am excited for the novel that is yet to come!
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
I believed! I was right there with Mungo as he told his stories. Moreover, it didn’t matter that I am a novice when it comes to baseball. The stories of Mungo’s career were captivating, told in a way that made it easy to go back in time, to follow the action of the games, to see the personalities involved, and to laugh and sigh over their shenanigans. This is a great script, and a great performance. I highly recommend this show.

Mungo is expertly written by Reyna and Brown; a tightly crafted piece of material that serves as a great foundation for the charming, passionate portrayal of Mungo issued by Reyna. It is a captivating evening of theatre and really should not be missed.

Marc Peter Reyna’s passionate performance made this play truly entertaining. The audience felt like they were listening to Van Lingle Mungo humorously tell the story of his successes and failures in not only baseball, but his life. Wonderfully written and acted – a definite home run!

WHAT I LIKED
I enjoyed the more intimate theater experience. The topic was well presented and drew me into the moment.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Asking me to offer suggestions on how to improve on Peter’s writing and acting is like asking a painter on a construction crew to evaluate the Mona Lisa and tell Rembrandt how he can do better!!!
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
I thought the play was very well written, leading us through this man’s life and times holding my interest and carrying me through all of the ups and downs he faced. There was just the right balance of humor and seriousness.
Peter’s embodiment this gentleman was sensitive and poignant. I was carried along on the rollercoaster of his life’s way and enjoyed every minute of it.
Thank you Peter for introducing me to this man and having a wonderful experience meeting him.

WHAT I LIKED
As all my friends know, I am NOT a sports fan. It just does not interest me. But I do enjoy stories of colorful personalities and Van Lingle Mungo was certainly that. The play brought out the disparate sides of the man and made me feel for someone that by the bones of the story would not have enjoyed knowing. This play brought him to life in a way that his insides and vulnerabilities made him poignant and thrilling. A great experience for everyone!
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
Took me away from the USA in these times and transported me to a past and a character that completely ensnared me. Wonderful

Just loved this play! Do you like monologues? Baseball? Or just plain old good theatre? Veterans James Harmon Brown and Marc Peter Reyna (playwright and lead actor respectively) have created a wonderful play. Ably directed by George Lockwood. Run, do not walk, to see this one.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Loved it all.
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
Fun evening was had by all audience members!

WHAT I LIKED
It was great to see Greg Peter Reyna disappear, and “Mungo”
arrive to relate some of the many colourful stories in his life.
From the drawl to the swagger and mannerisms, we were in the room with the one-and-only, Van Lingo Mungo!
The script, direction, and staging were all first rate.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Nothing
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
I highly recommend this play to audiences of every age,
and, oh… thanks for the ‘CrackerJacks’!

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
While Alfred Pujols was breaking records this past Saturday, another player was scoring an equally significant home run. Marc Peter Reyna truly hits it out of the park with his stellar portrayal of 1930’s little known, but larger-than-life professional baseball player, Van Lingle Mungo. MUNGO!, a one-man play about one man’s life choices, not always necessarily good ones, and his taking responsibility for same, absolutely shines! Reyna’s consummate performance is nuanced and tender, but also bombastic and exaggerated when needed for this character of all characters.
The play, written by Reyna and James Harmon Brown, an Emmy-award winning television writer, novelist and playwright, is funny, serious, and bittersweet in all the right places. Van breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to his audience, enabling them to empathize even more with his foibles and epiphanies. By the end, we cheer his ultimate success in this game called life.
Running 50 perfect minutes, this play is not to be missed. Do yourself a favor, and don’t miss this catch!

WHAT I LIKED
The entire production was stellar — from the writing to the performance. The play was well crafted with a wonderful balance of humor and pathos. The actor was captivating in the one-man show and the fact that this was a play about a historical baseball figure was superfluous to someone as myself who is not a baseball afficionado. You do not have to love or know about the sport to enjoy this wonderful piece of theatre.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
This is a family event and one anyone will enjoy.

What a fun hour this play was. Marc Peter Reyna magically brings to life a brash, hard-drinking, womanizing, and competitive true-life 1930s Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher with a charm, humility, and sincerity that captures us from beat one through the end. With a marvelously minimal set and just a small box of props, Reyna’s fully-realized character walks us through the hard-hitting wins and loses of a pro athlete who was good enough to make a couple All-Star teams, but not on a level to be remembered in the era of Ruth and Gehrig. It’s a pleasant, conversational tone throughout, as Reyna speaks directly, yet unobtrusively, to the audience, engendering many laughs and good willed sighs of empathy for Mungo and his ways pitch after pitch.

WHAT I LIKED
From the moment he appeared on stage, MPR commanded the attention of his audience with his ability to recount events of MUNGO’s life from rookie to retirement, especially the chip on his shoulder for a lack of recogniition among his peers, as well as his love for his wife.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Nothing. Fringe was lucky to have the caliber of Jim Brown and Mark Peter Reyna
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
Great play about a fascinating person. MPR brought this man to life so we could experience the highs and lows of an amazing character from days gone by. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy MUNGO. Bravo!

What stands out most is the way the piece connected to me. Right away there is a real human connection in both the writing and the performance…I swear my grandfather would tell me stories the same way…and it draws me in and doesn’t let go.
And the specificity of the performance, the nuanced behavior, the speech pattern…bravo!
The choice to use the box as his “prop bin/baseball storytime bin”…genius!
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
LOVED every second of it.

Even if you’re not a fan of America’s favorite pastime, you will be a fan of MUNGO!
An expertly crafted love story disguised as an autobiography of an infamous baseball player.

WHAT I LIKED
The acting. Simple. Calm. Sharp. Commanding. Hard to do in a one man show and Mungo makes it look effortless. I was in the front row.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Maybe there needed to be a little bit more about how his wife felt about his womanizing? Why she stuck with him. Maybe though that was a sign of the times and the writers didn’t focus on it because no one knows. I think I didn’t like it because they did such a great job at painting the character and I wanted to know more. SO maybe that is a great thing!
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
I knew nothing about Mungo. Nothing. And I was never bored. I wanted to know more. It was simply written and simply acted. That said it was NOT simple. It was sharp, smart, witty and funny. To be able to play off simple requires very professional commitment and this team has it in spades. That is a huge credit to the writing and acting. Placing Mungo as a sort of ghost returning to this corner in North Carolina (I thin it was north!) once a year on his birthday was a delightful invocation to this man and has a beautiful pay off at the end of the show. What is it? You need to go see it for yourself. Some of the best acting I’ve seen this Fringe. I really believed Mungo was back and that is difficult to do.Being entertained and learning something? So cool! This is not to be missed.

WHAT I LIKED
Acting was amazing. The stories were interesting. And the show was clever and at times hilarious.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
I thought it was well done. I can’t think of anything that needed improvement.
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
The writers and actor wrote a well thought out, witty, and original play about the life of a little known baseball player named Van Lingle Mungo. While the stories he told were interesting, it was the way Van interacted with the audience that I found most entertaining. While Van had a lot of natural talent, it was his lack of self control, both on and off the field, that kept him from going down in history as one of the all time greats. It really is a one of a kind show.
